Quintessa, Rutherford (2014) Napa Valley

New

A delicious Napa vintage and now with years in bottle the Quintessa Bordeaux-blend has harmonised and softened into a seriously impressive offering. Truffle, five spice and clove intermingle with fresh cassis and black plum, along with some fresh red cherry. The tannins are supple and still tightly packed, and there’s plenty of cleansing acidity to create a lifted, gourmand finish.

Hailed as a “magnificent estate in Rutherford” by Robert M. Parker Jr., Quintessa is one of Napa Valley’s finest Bordeaux Blends that flies below the radar screen outside the USA. Located in the heart of Rutherford AVA, Quintessa has the region’s finest collections of vineyards that sit at the foot of the Vaca Mountain Range with a variety of soils and microclimates. French legend Michel Rolland has been the consultant of the winery since 2000. The vines of Quintessa are planted on virgin soil that has never been exploited until the late 1980s. Free from any contamination, the soil is healthy without blemish. The name “Quintessa” means the 5 elements, and ‘harmony with nature’ is the focus of the wine-making here. They began farming organically in 1990, and then biodynamically in 1996.
