We only make ‘Martelo vintages’ when our winemaker’s most demanding requirements are met: fresh vintages, with pleasing tannins and long, unhurried, well-balanced ripening. In each of these vintages, our winemaker Julio Sáenz, carries out his own ‘personal selection’ of plots, choosing those best suited to the Martelo style and personality.
The main variety is Tempranillo, which is complemented by others such as Mazuelo, Garnacha and even Viura, representing the most traditional plantations in the area. Over 60-year-old vines, distributed across north-south facing slopes have good exposure to the sun and wind, achieving balanced ripeness and magnificent condition.
Ageing mostly in American oak casks adds sweetness and softness without an excessive tannic load and contributes delicate and complex nuances.
The wine’s structure and elegance makes it an ideal food companion. The longevity in the mouth makes it perfect with braised and roasted meats, as well as game and cured sausages.
