Ramón Bilbao Gran Reserva Rioja (2012)

New

An alluring, ethereal, aromatic nose of sandalwood and spice make this a suave and easygoing wine that has an oriental touch. The smoky, bacony oak dominates, but the tannins are perfectly formed.

A modern style Rioja,  despite the 36 months it spends in American oak. A deeply coloured blend of Tempranillo with 7% Mazuelo and 3% Graciano. It’s a youthful, concentrated red with plenty of backbone and structure, fresh acidity and layers of ripe plum and blueberry fruit.

Bodegas Ramón Bilbao was founded in 1924 by Ramón Bilbao Murga in Haro. He was an experienced wine trader and and a pioneer in the art of ageing. The winery stayed family owned until 1966, when Ramón Bilbao Pozo, last of the descendants, died.
In 1999 the winery was acquired by the family business of Diego Zamora, S.A., one of the largest beverage groups in Spain. The winery got renovated, with news facilities and top-quality wines were produced thanks to a great combination of innovation and tradition of la Rioja Alta.
Ramón Bilbao produces fruit driven styles as well as oaky wines, coming from the best estates and vineyards and with oak barrels from the best European and American forests.
Ramón Bilbao has been awarded the Best Spanish Winery prize in 2014 by the IWSC.
