Founded in 1792 by José Panaléon Hidalgo, originally from the north of Spain, who bought a bodega in Sanlúcar, Bodegas Hidalgo - La Gitana is still owned by the sixth generation of the family and is one of very few bodegas still totally in family ownership.
They are also unusual in producing largely from their own vineyards and have large parcels of the top quality Balbaína and Miraflores. From these they have made a great success of single vineyard releases although their best known wine is the top quality Manzanilla 'La Gitana' (The Gypsy). Javier Hidalgo is the current owner and is also well known as a horseman and ornithologist, and has played a leading role in preserving habitat in the Guadalquiver marshes
