As a leading South African ambassador and one of the most recognizable faces in the world of sport, Ernie Els has long demonstrated a passion for excellence. His focus, discipline and commitment have led to extraordinary golf success, and these same qualities are evident in Ernie Els Wines. Through his many travels around the globe Ernie has been exposed to and appreciated some of the world’s greatest wines and in 1999 decided to pursue this passion for fine wine with the creation of Ernie Els Wines. Ernie befittingly chose Stellenbosch, the noble heart of South African wine to base his operation. From the outset, Ernie Els Wines focused on delivering a premium product that would hold its own amongst the world’s finest wines. Ernie’s dream of owning vineyards and a winery finally came true in 2004 when the Ernie Els winery was established on a beautiful 72 hectare property located within Stellenbosch’s infamous ‘Golden Triangle’ on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. The location couldn’t be better as all the previous Ernie Els Signature blends had been produced from vineyards on these slopes. Most of the vineyards are ideally placed to receive optimal sunlight facing north, with rows set out in an east-westerly direction. The Cape’s Mediterranean climate, known for its hot summer days, cooling Atlantic sea breezes and approximate 650mm rainfall per annum help to extend the grape’s ripening period, which in turn produce rich wines with warmer fruit flavours.
