Porseleinberg Syrah (2021)

New

Given its consistently outstanding quality, it’s easy to forget that the average age of Porseleinberg's 14 hectares of vineyards is only seven years' old.  Wild herb aromas of sage, oregano and rosemary introduce you to a palate that's dense yet refined, with lots of whole bunch spice and structure, negligible oak influence, detailed, layered tannins, some underlying grip and layers of dark berry fruit. One of the world's great reds from a very special site.

Porseleinberg is named after the farm and the mountain on which it is grown, which sits south of the Kasteelberg in the Swartland. Rhône fanatic and visionary, Marc Kent – of Boekenhoutskloof fame – bought the property in 2009, and in an inspired move hired Callie Louw to manage it independently. The wild, windy hilltop vineyard, with its extremely rocky blue schist soils, yields one of South Africa’s greatest Syrahs – a wine which comfortably rubs shoulders with the very greatest Syrahs on the planet. The inaugural vintage of this intense, structured, and captivating wine was 2010. The 2021 is the twelfth vintage, but the eleventh release, as the tiny 2011 vintage was never commercially released.
