The wine is a dark purple, showing classic spicy blackberry aromas on the nose with notes of liquorice and dark chocolate. Despite the colour Leftfield Malbec is an exploration of a lighter and fresher style of Malbec and something of a revelation. The palate is fruit-driven and forward, with assertive blackcurrant/plum characters echoing notes of herb, spice, and chocolate, all bedded on a supple tannin structure.

Left Field is part of the Te Awa Collection, created by the experienced winemaking team of Richard Painter and Ant Mackenzie in the prestigious Hawke’s Bay. Here, the winemakers literally went to the left side of the vineyard in their search for inspiration, crafting approachable, consumer-oriented, premium regional vineyards. Sophisticated wines, without being stand-offish.
Malbec, famously associated with France and Argentina, grows well in the well-drained warm soils of Hawke's Bay where it develops a good level of ripeness which can be detected on the rich palate.
Te Awa occupies a prime position in the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District, one of the premium Hawkes Bay wine growing sites. This district is determined by the gravelly soils laid down by the old Ngaruroro River, which were exposed after a huge flood in the 1860's.
The grapes for this Malbec were harvested from two select parcels in Te Awa's Gimblett Gravels vineyards and picked in the cool of the morning. In the winery the grapes were gently processed to open top fermenters for fermentation. The young wine then went to barrel for 18 months in a mix of French and American oak before blending and bottling.
