Chateau Musar (1983) (Only 2 available)

New

Serge Hochar had been in the U.S. and had assumed that picking would not be possible due to intense fighting above the Bekaa Valley. Once word came that the situation had improved, he made his way back, via Paris and Cyprus. The grapes were very ripe, but picking was completed without problems from the weather. With the usual route back to the winery blocked, trucks of grapes were forced to cross the Bekaa and Israeli occupied lines. Despite all these troubles, a great vintage was produced.

Musar. A wine that has survived war, commercial wilderness and even comments that it has a ‘weird, briney note to some vintages’. Why? Because it is one of the most interesting, unique and complex wines in the world. Its grapes are grown in the Bekaa valley, the ‘bread basket’ of ancient Rome, and transported over the high coastal range to Serge Hochar, son of the founder Gaston.

Chateau Musar was the first in Lebanon to implement organically certified viticulture. The grapes used to make the first wine of Chateau Musar, the Chateau Musar Red are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan from mature vines which yield approximately 30 to 35 hectolitres per hectare. All grapes are harvested by hand by local Bedouins in the morning as it is cooler and preserves the freshness of the grapes. They are then driven for 2 1/2 hours over the mountains to the winery at Ghazir. The wines are usually made available for drinking seven years after the harvest.

The fruit was super ripe in 1983, sweet and raisiny which resulted in a wine richly spiced, complex and fragrant. Full bodied yet supple with an elegant finish. Now showing some maturity and ripeness with excellent condition and balance. The wine is developing increasingly complex flavours, richly spiced and fragrant, full bodied yet supple with an elegant finish.
The harvest started much later than usual on the 23rd September. Serge Hochar had been in the U.S. and had assumed that picking would not be possible due to intense fighting in the mountains above the Bekaa Valley. Once word came that the situation had improved, he made his way back, via Paris and Cyprus. The grapes were very ripe, almost over-mature, but picking was completed without problems from the weather. With the usual route back to the winery blocked, trucks of grapes were forced to cross the Bekaa and Israeli occupied lines north of the vineyard holdings, during which journey one truckload was hit by gunfire, thankfully without loss. Despite all these troubles, a great vintage was produced.
