This 2017 Brunello from Caparzo is characterised by aromas of rich red cherry and raspberry laced with spiced plum, menthol, liquorice and Mediterranean herbs. Lithe acidity is matched by structured tannins and while there is still plenty of rich fruit on the palate, a delicious earthy quality with hints of leather is evolving on the finish to give yet more complexity. This is drinking fabulously already.

100% Sangiovese, aged for more than 2 years in durmast casks. Brunello expresses the character and nobility of the hand-harvested grapes from the Vigna del Castell and the Vigna del Velo.
Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and the region's boldest expression of Sangiovese. Located 30 miles south of Siena with the hilltop town of Montalcino as its epicentre, its 2,000 hectares of vines are naturally delimited by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in purezza (ie 100 percent).
Caparzo is one of the original 13 'Brunello' wineries which has vineyards on the better sites surrounding Montelcino. The 2016 vintage originates from the premium sites in Carpazo, La Caduta, Il Cassero, and San Piero Caselle. Post-fermentation the wine spent 3 years in large Slavonian and French oak barrels before several months in bottle before release. Although still young in age, expressive aromas of wild berry fruits, sour cherry and a hint of violets and dried herbs rise from the glass alongside the earthy, minerally notes so common in the best Brunello's. You could drink it now but it's certainly one for the future.
