In 1980 Paolo Pellegrino founded a winery in the town of Marsala in Sicily, Italy, to produce a fortified wine. The Victorians greatly enjoyed the wine and helped by the British Empire, Marsala became hugely successful. The rest is history.
Today the Company is still family owned and managed and is now the undisputed market leader, appreciated in every corner of the world.
Grapes are pressed, fermented and a boiled must, called Calamich, is added together with grape spirits. The young wine is then left to mature in large cherry-wood barrels. By law, Marsala Superiore requires 2 years ageing and can only be made from white grapes with the exception of the ruby style.
