Karl Johner Pinot Gris (2017)

New

A typical Kaiserstuhl type wine with delicious aromas of pears and melons. Well balanced acidity, round and luscious combined with a mineral tension followed by a very subtle oak finish. The Kaiserstuhl is a volcanic outcrop towards the north of the Rhine valley and literally translated means Emperors chair (or throne).

In 1985 after ten years abroad Karl Heinz Johner and his wife Irene founded a little Weingut (vineyard & winery) in their home village “Bischoffingen” in the Kaiserstuhl. His focus was on the Burgundian styles – wines full of structure and pure elegance. Despite having to overcome problems relating to winemaking in the Kaiserstuhl and German wine laws the young Weingut soon established himself as a pioneer of a new German winestyle recognised as being of an International class. Today “Weingut Karl H Johner” is considered one of the best Estates in Germany and is recognised amongst most wine experts.

The Pinot Gris fruit parcels in the blend are sourced from a combination of vineyards on loess and volcanic soils around Bischoffingen in the heart of the Kaiserstuhl. The vineyards undergo intense canopy management, de-leafing and green harvest to intensify the fruit character. The fruit was left on the vine until it reached optimum flavour and then harvested and sorted by hand to ensure that only the perfect grapes were used for the wine.
