Unusually fresh and relatively bright aromas in the context of where the vast majority of '76s are today, even from larger format bottles, with spicy red and black fruit, sous-bois and earth hints that introduce rich, delicious and still vibrant medium full flavors underpinned by firm but integrated tannins on the long if ever-so-slightly drying finish. This is highly complex and drinking perfectly now and though it will hold for another 50 years in this format, I can't see any further improvement. A first rate example of the vintage.

    About the domain

In 1880 Joseph Drouhin founded the eponymous wine merchant, but it was his son, Maurice, who after the First World War, started to buy some of the good parcels around Beaune, including the famous Clos des Mouches. Maurice's nephew, Robert, continued his uncle's good work and expanded the domain in to certain prestigious terrroirs, such as Musigny, Griotte-Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Grands Échézeaux, etc. A pioneer in vinification methods, he was one of the first winemakers in Burgundy to move towards sustainable farming principles: limited fertilisers and treatments, yield management, etc. The Joseph Drouhin house has been managed by Robert Drouhin's four children since 2003. This famous house in Beaune is internationally renowned and consists of 72 hectares of vineyard, divided in to 26 ha of red and 46 ha of white. It spreads from north to south between Chablis (38 hectares), Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune (30 hectares). In 1987 the Domaine also acquired vines in Orégon.

    About the cuvée

The Clos des Mouches from the Maison Joseph Drouhin comes from vineyards on south-facing slopes. The winemakers' beehives had an ideal location in the olden days, the "Mouche" was the noble name for the bee, which is the origine if the name of the place. The six and a half hectares of light and stony soil produces a prestigious red wine from a selection of Pinot Noir. It has a light and shiny ruby colour. Its nose has racy aromas reminiscent of ripe cherry, certain spices and a discrete smoky undertone. On the palate it has a lovely combination of roundness, structure and elegance.
