Château Haut Bailly (2022)

New

A brilliant vintage for Haut Bailly, made in their beautiful state of the art cellar. There’s so much aromatic complexity with tons of floral notes and fragrant berry fruit. The blackberry, currant and raspberry carries onto the palate with incense, violet, pepper, woody herbs and mineral tones. Smooth as silk on the palate with just a little minerally grip on the finish. Powerful and concentrated but in a lithe, vibrant, refreshing frame.

This, the 25th vintage from Véronique Sanders under the Wilmers family ownership, is a high watermark in this fine estate’s history. The balance is impeccable. Véronique says Léognan received 40mm of rain in August (versus 28mm in the Médoc). This extra refreshment, allied to the deep roots of their old vines, meant that the final stretch of maturation was completed without any pressure.

The wine sets out its stall instantly with a beguiling array of floral notes before settling into seamless layers of soft fruit, smoky spice, granite and luxurious earthy textures. The tannins are brilliant, supportive and expressive; the freshness allows the wine to sing.
