the 2020 Pavie Macquin is deep garnet-purple in color. It bursts with bold notions of baked plums, boysenberries, and fresh, juicy blackberries, plus hints of Indian spices, violets, and clove oil. The full-bodied palate explodes with vibrant black and blue fruits, supported by super-soft tannins and a lively backbone, leading to a long and perfumed finish on this beautiful wine.

The estate
Château Pavie Macquin was founded in the 19th century by Albert Macquin, the man who introduced grafted vines to France in order to save the country's vineyards from the destruction caused by phylloxera. Today, the estate still belongs to the descendants of Albert Macquin. This Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion is an essential name of Bordeaux's Right Bank and is one of the greatest wines in the world.
The vineyard
Château Pavie Macquin extends over 15 hectares in clay-limestone soils on the plateau of limestone rocks in Saint-Émilion.
The vintage
The heavy rainfall and warm temperatures of winter 2020 favoured an early budding of the vines. An episode of frost on April 17 was followed by record rainfall, causing significant mildew pressure and slowing down the development of the vines. Thanks to sufficient wind counteracting the effects of the humidity, flowering took place under good conditions. The beginning of June was marked by cool temperatures and very heavy rains, which ceased from June 19 to August 11. The beautiful thermal amplitudes, the cool nights of August and the rainy days at the end of the summer created ideal conditions for the ripening of the grapes. September saw the return of cool temperatures and rainfall, refining the ripeness, colours and tannic structure of the grapes in time for the harvest.
