The 2020 Calon Ségur shows the breeding of this impeccable terroir beautifully. Fine boned and fairly opulent, there's an effortless weight that glides across the palate. Long and pure, with notes of iodine and plenty of cassis, this is really rather lovely.

The estate
Calon was the name given to a kind of boat used in the Middle Ages to transport lumber from one bank of the Garonne to the other. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Segur, who received the estate through marriage, added his name to it. And so, the label of this 3rd Classified Growth of Saint-Estèphe was born.
Château Calon-Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century. In 2012, the property was bought by Suravenir Assurances, who continue to produce wines with an inimitable style and a pure expression of the appellation.
Château Calon Ségur has also become famous for the label adorning the bottles of the property. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed served as the symbol of the property, paying homage to the following quote from the Marquis de Ségur: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon". For nearly three centuries, fans of Château Calon Ségur have continued to remain loyal to this iconic property of the appellation.
The vineyard
The Château Calon Ségur vineyard covers an area of ??50 hectares, of which 48 hectares are in production. The vines, 20 years old on average, are planted in a thick layer of Garonne gravel dating from the Quaternary period, with a fine level of lacustrine clay on the top.
Vinification and ageing
Manual harvest. First sorting of the grapes on foot. Vibrating destemmer and manual sorting table. Thermo-regulated stainless steel tapered tanks. 18 to 21 days vatting. Micro-bullage. Co-inoculation, yeasts and exogenous bacteria in stainless steel vats at 25 ° C. Ageing lasts 20 months in new barrels.
The blend
The Château Calon Ségur 2020 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Merlot (12%), Cabernet Franc (9%) and Petit Verdot (1%).
