Nestled up in Castillon, a stone's throw from Saint-Emilion, sits Château Mauperey. Entirely family-run by the Laurets, Mauperey boasts excellent quality Merlot at a snip of the price of its better known neighbours. The clay-rich soils here retain the winter rain that feeds the vines, but when it dries out and becomes compact, the vines have to work extra hard to reach the water beneath. A tough time for the vines = good flavour in the wine!
