Certain de May is situated on Pomerol’s prized plateau neighbouring Vieux Château Certain and La Fleur-Pétrus. The 2016 is a sumptuous Merlot-dominant blend with beautiful notes of blackberry, black cherry, roses and tapenade. The palate is quietly intense with black fruit set against a backdrop of fine-grained tannins, seamless freshness and a long, mineral-edged finish.

Jean-Claude Berrouet, the former wine-maker at Petrus is now consulting at Certan de May. The style is certainly less exotic and confused and is a more focussed, more classical and altogether more alluring. It will be fascinating to see what one of the most revered names in Pomerol can achieve at this well situated estate. There is plenty of creamy, rich, Merlot fruit and a nice floral touch. This is a much more focussed effort with judicious use of new oak and admirable precision of flavour. It is still quite sexy and sleek but there is a firmness and tautness that one doesn't associate with Certan de May. It is much more muscular than usual with excellent texture and a real refinement to the tannins.
