Château Lagrange (2016)

New

This Chateau is the largest of all the classed growths with 117 hectares of vines (4 of which are planted with white varieties). Top quality Saint Julien has been produced here since the late 1980's when it was bought by the Suntory group of Japan. This quality level is partly achieved by the production of a very good second wine, Les Fiefs de Lagrange, which in most vintages makes up more than 50% of production.

Château Lagrange is a 3rd cru classé of 1855 produced in the Saint-Julien appellation. The 118-hectare vineyard benefits from vines aged 42 years on average, planted on the gravely hillsides of the Garonne with silico-gravelly soils upon clay-limestone subsoils. Château Lagrange 2016 blends 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. The wine is aged in barrels (60% in new barrels) for 21 months.

Château Lagrange 2016 experienced a mild and rainy spring with early, but not too early, budburst. Flowering took place perfectly, thanks to a window of good weather at just the right time. Spring finally gave way to a warm and dry summer. The harvest took place from the 3rd to the 24th of October.

At tasting, the Château Lagrange 2016 presents a dark, almost black colour, with shades of purple. The nose gives off aromas of black fruits (black cherries, blackcurrant) and spicy notes (liquorice, pepper). The palate shows richness, revealing a full-bodied wine with subtle touches of mint. The Château Lagrange 2016 is round, powerful and of an exceptional length. Silky and delicate, the tannins announce through their marked presence a fantastic ageing potential. An extremely harmonious wine.
