Jean-Charles Cazes coined the 2018 vintage 'Purple Rain', a literal rather than metaphorical title we think. There's nothing melancholic about these wines, they are brimming with life and joy. Ormes de Pez offers a lot of wine for the money. It certainly shares the same DNA as big brother Lynch Bages with a subdued and refined palate of dark fruit. Taut and muscular with a nice floral aromatic quality and a serious core of cassis, creme de mûre and minerals, framed by saline grippy tannins.

Ormes de Pez is one of the stand-out Chateaux in St.Estephe sited in the northern part of the village surrounding the hamlet of Pez. It was purchased by Jean-Charles Cazes in 1936 and today is owned by Jean-Michel Cazes, the owner of Lynch Bages. This historic chateau dates back to 1792, when it was constructed after the sale and division of Chateau de Pez as a result of the French Revolution. It boasts stunning terroir and aspect, some of the best in the commune and the Cazes family have invested heavily in the Chateau and the vineyards. Ormes De Pez was classified as one of the 9 Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnels in 2003
"This has the luxurious kick of the Lynch Bages stable and is brilliant value for this level of quality. It seems to manage this every vintage and is just such a brilliant drinking wine. 2018 is another excellent year here, with deep fruitfulness of brambled hedgerow alongside liquorice and woodsmoke. It has a polyphenol index of 84IPT, so this is full of tannins but they don`t feel overpowering. Tasted several times and always striking. 45% new oak. 3.57pH." 93 points (Jane Anson)
