Château Ormes de Pez (2016)

New

This has a dark ruby hue. Even before you have lowered your nose into the glass, this comes at you with a wave of dark, black fruit – think Morello cherry, cassis and liquorice. The palate feels “cool” but is full-bodied, with elegant, silky tannins and a long finish.

Chateau Ormes de Pez is a Cru Bourgeois produced in the Saint-Estephe appellation. The 35 hectare vineyard is planted on a terroir of sandy-gravel. The wine is matured in barrels, with 45% of them being new. The 2016 vintage is a blend of Merlot 52%,Cabernet Sauvignon 42%, Cabernet Franc 5% and Petit Verdot 1%.

The 2016 vintage was affected by a mild winter and heavy rainfall from January to March. Budding occurred early, but it was homogenous. April and May were cool and humid, slowing down development. Freezing was avoided, but mildew took advantage of sensitive plots. Flowers arrived in late May. Summer was hot and dry, with temperatures exceeding 35°C. The 11 mm of rain that accumulated from June 25th-September 13th. Harvest occurred on September 27th and lasted until October 11th.

Chateau Ormes de Pez 2016 is rich, fine and elegant. The nose is rather fruity, with aromas of Morello cherries, blackberries and blackcurrants with a subtle note of liquorice. A full-bodied fresh wine, with silky tannins and an incredibly long finish.
