There are not many producers worldwide that can reliably produce certified organic wine every year – the extremely tight restrictions on spraying programmes can prove a daunting commitment for many grape growers when a season turns unusually wet, or a natural spike in pest populations sees many growers reaching for the pesticide. However, here in Mendoza the climate is naturally dry and the altitude is high, minimising the need to utilise spraying programmes in even non-organic vineyards, so the vines grow in a perfect microclimate for organic production. Santa Ana are equally proud of the high quality premium end of their wine production. The La Mascota wines are where winemaker Opi really gets into his stride – through site and parcel selection, small batch fermentation and barrel ageing.
